Day 4 - Pole vault troubles

Tuesday, August 09, 2005

Wierd happenings in the Pole Vault. The qualifying height was initially set at 5.7 meters, and Toby Stephenson, the man that many people were predicting to win the gold medal, passed at 5.3, 5.45 and 5.6 meters, and was planning to join in at 5.7 meters. At 5.6 meters, however, one of the athletes had a bad jump and somehow managed to land on one of the brackets that holds the pole up, breaking it, and sending it crashing to the ground. The athlete was OK, however the equipment was damaged beyond the ability to fix it, so the qualifying height was changed to 5.6 meters. At this point, Toby Stephenson was given the chance to clear 5.6 meters, however he decided to withdraw due to injury. He looked fine in the warmups, however, so this seems like a very strange decision from a pre-meet favorite. Sergei Bubka was steaming mad about the equipment issues, and had to be physically restrained on the field.
